The Template Business Paradox: The easiest templates to build (personal productivity) have the most competition and lowest prices. The hardest to build (business operations, team workflows) have the least competition and highest prices. Most creators start with what's easy and get stuck competing on price.
Template niche determines your entire business trajectory. Evaluate each potential niche on three axes.

Proven niches with pricing power (as of 2025-2026): Freelancer business OS ($49-149), startup operations ($99-299), content creator workflow ($39-99), student study system ($19-49), personal finance tracker ($19-39), job search tracker ($15-29), wedding planner ($29-59), real estate pipeline ($49-199).
Saturated niches (hard to differentiate): generic second brain, basic habit tracker, simple to-do list, reading tracker, meal planner. These CAN work but require exceptional design or unique angle.

Notion Marketplace pricing reality: The marketplace creates downward price pressure. Templates priced above $39 struggle on the marketplace but thrive on direct sales. If your template is worth $79+, sell it direct and use the marketplace only for discovery/lead generation with a lighter version.

Platform gotcha: Notion Marketplace approval takes 2-4 weeks and rejection is common. Rejection reasons: too similar to existing templates, quality below threshold, missing documentation. Always have Gumroad/Lemon Squeezy as your backup channel. Don't build your business on marketplace approval.
Documentation quality directly correlates with refund rates and review scores. The #1 reason for Notion template refunds is "I don't understand how to use it."

Building templates without validating demand. "I made a cool template, let me sell it." No niche research, no competitor analysis, no audience. Symptom: 0-3 sales in first month despite "good" template.
