Success in a product management career requires shifting from a short-term focus (the next promotion) to a long-term "Skip" strategy (the job after the next one). This skill helps you diagnose why you are stalled and how to build a "career story" that makes you world-class in a specific lane of product leadership.
If you are not getting promoted, you must identify which of these four roadblocks is the primary cause. Do not ask your manager "What do I do to get promoted?" Instead, use this checklist to find the ground truth.
You may have the "magic," but the people in the room (your manager or the promotion committee) don't see it or aren't championing it.
You are qualified, but the organizational structure has no opening at the next level. This is common in "ex-growth" companies or during "layers-to-ICs" restructures.
High performers often expect annual promotions. Leadership skills (soft skills, influence, strategy) take longer to absorb and have lagging impact.
There is a substantive weakness you are either unaware of or refusing to hear.
Stop looking at your boss’s job; look at your boss’s boss’s job (The Skip).
Avoid joining or staying at companies that have raised significant capital but lack a "sucking sound" of customer demand.
