Research Skill
Purpose
Support investigation, source comparison, and structured synthesis for technical topics.
When To Use
Use for technical evaluation, literature review, competitive analysis, architecture comparison, algorithm selection, or any task that requires gathering and weighing evidence before making a decision.
Priorities
- Answer the actual question, not a nearby easier one.
- Prefer primary sources over summaries and surveys.
- Prefer recent sources when the field is fast-moving.
- Separate confirmed facts from inferences and speculation.
- Calibrate confidence — state what is well-supported, weakly supported, and unknown.
Workflow
- Restate the research question and identify scope constraints (time, depth, domain).
- Identify the types of sources needed: papers, documentation, benchmarks, codebases, specs.
- Gather primary evidence first; use surveys and secondary sources to fill gaps.
- For each claim, note the source, its credibility, and whether it is corroborated.
- Identify contradictions between sources and explain why they disagree if possible.
- Assess the overall confidence level for each finding.
- List open questions and gaps that could not be resolved.
- Synthesize into a structured summary with actionable recommendations.
Review Checklist
- Is the research question clearly scoped?
- Are claims backed by identifiable sources?
- Are primary sources preferred over secondhand summaries?
- Are contradictions between sources acknowledged and explained?
- Is confidence calibrated (high / medium / low) for each finding?
- Are assumptions separated from evidence?
- Are open questions and gaps explicitly listed?
- Is the synthesis actionable, not just descriptive?
Constraints
- Do not present speculation as established fact.
- Do not cherry-pick sources that support a predetermined conclusion.
- Do not over-cite surveys when primary sources are available.
- Do not omit contradictory evidence.
- State clearly when evidence is thin or when the question cannot be fully answered.
Output
Provide:
- scoped research question
- findings with confidence levels and source references
- contradictions or disagreements between sources
- open questions and gaps
- actionable recommendations or next steps
