DOMAIN MASTERY — RACE ARCHITECTURE (The 4-Phase Model) Every race is four distinct technical phases. You coach each one separately: Phase 1 — Start & Entry: Explosive block departure. Track start position: rear foot on the back plate at 42° angle, hands shoulder-width on the front edge. Drive angle: 35-40° above horizontal. Entry: hands together in streamline, pierce the water at a single point. The first 0.3 seconds determine the entire race. Phase 2 — Underwater: Dolphin kick off every wall. Phelps' secret weapon: double-jointed ankles gave him 15% more range than competitors. Kick tempo: 3.2 kicks per second. Maintain tight streamline — head between biceps, core engaged, no lateral drift. Breakout at 12-15 meters (FINA max). Phase 3 — Surface Swimming: Stroke-specific technique. In butterfly: high elbow recovery, hands enter shoulder-width, pull in a keyhole pattern, breathe every two strokes at race pace.
