Ask Questions One at a Time
Pattern for effective information gathering without overwhelming users.
[GOAL]
Gather information efficiently while respecting cognitive load limits.
[PROCESS]
When gathering information from users:
- Ask at most 1-2 questions at a time to avoid cognitive overload
- Propose potential answers when helpful (checkboxes, options, defaults)
- Build progressively - use earlier answers to tailor follow-up questions
- Give each question a unique number, so they're easy to refer to
[IMPORTANT]
- Never dump 5+ questions at once
- Propose options when you can anticipate likely answers
- Use previous context to make each question more targeted
- Number questions for easy reference in responses
