skills/systematic-debugging/SKILL.md
Structured debugging methodology that mandates root cause investigation before attempting any fixes. Use when encountering any bug, test failure, or unexpected behavior, before proposing fixes. ESPECIALLY when under time pressure, when "just one quick fix" seems obvious, when you've already tried multiple fixes, or when you don't fully understand the issue. Do NOT skip when the issue seems simple — simple bugs have root causes too.
npx skillsauth add Thomashighbaugh/opencode systematic-debuggingInstall this skill globally with one command. Works with Claude Code, Cursor, and Windsurf.
3 of 9 scanners reported clean
Some scanners were skipped, did not run, or reported a non-clean status. Review each row below.
Random fixes waste time and create new bugs. Quick patches mask underlying issues.
Core principle: ALWAYS find root cause before attempting fixes. Symptom fixes are failure.
Violating the letter of this process is violating the spirit of debugging.
NO FIXES WITHOUT ROOT CAUSE INVESTIGATION FIRST
If you haven't completed Phase 1, you cannot propose fixes.
Use for ANY technical issue:
Use this ESPECIALLY when:
Don't skip when:
You MUST complete each phase before proceeding to the next.
BEFORE attempting ANY fix:
Read Error Messages Carefully
Reproduce Consistently
Check Recent Changes
Gather Evidence in Multi-Component Systems
WHEN system has multiple components (CI → build → signing, API → service → database):
BEFORE proposing fixes, add diagnostic instrumentation:
For EACH component boundary:
- Log what data enters component
- Log what data exits component
- Verify environment/config propagation
- Check state at each layer
Run once to gather evidence showing WHERE it breaks
THEN analyze evidence to identify failing component
THEN investigate that specific component
Trace Data Flow
WHEN error is deep in call stack:
Find the pattern before fixing:
Scientific method:
Fix the root cause, not the symptom:
If you catch yourself thinking:
ALL of these mean: STOP. Return to Phase 1.
If 3+ fixes failed: Question the architecture.
| Phase | Key Activities | Success Criteria | |-------|---------------|------------------| | 1. Root Cause | Read errors, reproduce, check changes, gather evidence | Understand WHAT and WHY | | 2. Pattern | Find working examples, compare | Identify differences | | 3. Hypothesis | Form theory, test minimally | Confirmed or new hypothesis | | 4. Implementation | Create test, fix, verify | Bug resolved, tests pass |
tools
Create valid, type-safe TypeScript tools for OpenCode — generates correct boilerplate, typed interfaces, and handler stubs. Use when building new tools for global config or per-project .opencode/tools/.
testing
Explore multiple solution branches in parallel, evaluate each, and recommend the best path. Use when the user explicitly invokes /ideation tree-of-thoughts or asks for "tree of thought" / "branching exploration".
testing
Run multiple independent reasoning passes and find consensus. Use when the decision is critically important, the stakes are high, or the user explicitly requests "run it multiple times" / "check consistency" / "self-consistency".
testing
Optimization by PROmpting — generate candidate prompt variations, test each against a benchmark, and report the best performer. Use when the user invokes /ideation opro or asks for "prompt optimization" / "OPRO".
